Trip to Skegness

Thursday 12th September

Y1 and Y2 had an amazing day trip to Skegness!  This was the initial stimulus for our geography topic based on comparing the physical and human geography of two contrasting localities (Nottingham and Skegness).  Before the trip, we found out about the journey from Nottingham to Skegness, discussed seaside locations and shared past experiences.  The Y2 children also wrote questions we could ask the workers and the holiday makers to find out about the pros and cons of Skegness.

The day itself was jam packed full of fun that helped the children to find out about the human and physical geography of Skegness.

We went for a walk around Skegness, finding out about the key features of the locality; including the fair, the Jolly Fisherman, the lifeboat station, the clock tower, the cafes and souvenir shops, the arcades, the beach, the sea and the pier.

We then enjoyed a picnic on the beach and had fun playing in the sand.

We went in smaller groups down to the the sea for a paddle and explored the shallow waters.

Next, we had a walk along the pier and the Y2 children interviewed some workers and holiday makers.  The children asked their pre-prepared questions and recorded the answers on an I-pad, to look at and use for future work back at school.

Before heading back to Hyson Green, we had time to enjoy an ice-cream.

What a busy day!!!

The Day We Met An Author!

It was so difficult trying to pick out just a few photos of the amazing visit we had from Mr. Mark Robertson.

Mark began his session talking to us about what it was like being an author and he shared some of the exclusive pages from his drafting books.  The story mountain gives us some crucial information on how an author plans their story – a useful tool for the classroom and home learning!  Mark also shared some of his original illustrations for the books he writes – what a talented man!

After the disussion time, Mark did a live drawing and created our very own Year 5 troll!  The remaining photos show some of the stages he took whilst creating the character.  It was breathtaking to watch and very inspiring!  The original drawings that Mark created for each class can be found displayed in the school library.

History Learning Leaders

This term our topic has been the Mayans.  Mrs Nicholson arranged for 3 History students from Nottingham University to come in to our class to help teach us about who the Mayans were and how their ancient civilisation became so well known.  The photos below show the results of a fact finding lesson the students organised.  We learnt about the different Gods that the Maya worshipped; we were given a fact each about a particular God; and finally we had to find all the people in the classroom with a fact about the same God.  We finished the session by sitting in our groups and writing down all the facts we had learnt about.  It was great fun!

The Great Fire of London

Fire!!

On Tuesday 25th February, Year 1 were visited by The Partake Theatre Company and enjoyed a fantastic history morning focused on The Great Fire of London. The children all wore costumes and re-enacted the events of The Great Fire of London.  They learnt lots of interesting information about the fire of 1666 which has given them a great foundation for this topic this half term.

World Book Day

What a great day we have had!  The children came into school looking fabulous in their costumes and were eager to celebrate world book day.  We started the day by gathering together as a whole school for a World Book Day themed assembly.  When we got back to class the children transformed into both author and illustrator and created their own book titled ‘The Gingerbread Man’.  To help with this creative process the children of course had to bake their very own gingerbread men, which were delicious!

Lenten Reflection Day

The children spent the day reflecting how they could grow in love like God.  They created giving promises and contributed them in a whole class Collective Worship. During the session Mrs Carberry crossed our heads with Ashes.

Edible Schools

Jules, who is working alongside ‘Edible’ project  schools  visited the school and gave a short assembly to the F1 and F2 children about where food comes from, air miles and the importance of growing food. She then showed us all how to plant a seed.
