A Visit from Poppy the Guide Dog

Today, we had a visit from Ms Spray’s mum and her guide dog Poppy.  Poppy is 10 years old and helps Ms Spray’s mum to get about and do her jobs. She showed us how good Poppy was at following commands. We gave Poppy some snacks and we all got the opportunity to  stroke her.

F1 and F2 Police Community Officer Visit

F1 and F2 had a very special visitor in class today,  Police Community Officer Lucy.  She spoke to the children about her job, reassuring them that if they need help the Police will keep you safe.  She also emphasised the importance of knowing the 999 number and their home address. We then went outside to find out about her police car.  The children loved trying on the hats and jackets, sitting in the police car, looking at the flashing lights and listening to the siren.  What an amazing day!  Don’t forget to wave next time you see a police officer in their car.

Fun in F1

It’s been a great week in nursery and with home learning. Thank you all who have attended the live sessions. It has been a learning curve for us all.

In the nursery we have been doing many activities. We have been looking at people who help us such as Doctors, Fire Fighters, Police Officers and more! Take a look and see who we are dressed as!

Our story we have shared is The 3 Little Pigs. We hope you have enjoyed the story online. In our construction area the children have built the little pigs houses!

We also explored the snowy weather, wrapping up warm in our hats, gloves and coats to make our very own snowman. Did any of you at home play out in the snow?

There have been lots of you who have attended our live sessions and it has been so good to keep in contact with so many of you and see your happy faces everyday. You are doing amazing. Thank you to the grown ups for the great support you are giving your children.

Lanterns

After listening to the story ‘Owl Babies’, we talked about feeling scared like Sarah, Percy and Bill.  The baby owls felt scared whilst their mummy owl was out hunting for food. Sometimes people feel scared when it is dark so we made lanterns to remind us that the light can make us feel safer and happier when it is dark.

F1 Anti-Bullying week – WB 16.11.20

This week in F1 we have been focusing on ‘Anti-Bullying Week’.  We listened to the story of the ‘Rainbow Fish’ which helped us to think about the importance of sharing and being kind.  Following on from the story, we decorated the Rainbow Fish with colourful and shiny scales and talked about ways that we can share.  During this weeks collective worship, the children thought about how to be a good friend and show kindness; ideas were then scribed on to a jigsaw template that will form part of a whole school display. We also made friendship bracelets and friendship wands for each other as an act of kindness.

Making Gingerbread People in F1

In F1 we have been reading the ‘Gingerbread Man’.  We have enjoyed retelling the story with character props, by physically taking on the role of the Gingerbread Man and by creating a story map.  Yesterday, the children had a great time making their own gingerbread people and today they enjoyed decorating and eating them.  Yummy, yummy in my tummy!

Autumn walk

We had a great time being nature detectives on our autumn walk, looking for signs of the different colours of autumn.  We used colour cards to help us to remember the colours we were looking for and then found autumnal objects that matched each colour card.

Trip to Skegness

Thursday 12th September

Y1 and Y2 had an amazing day trip to Skegness!  This was the initial stimulus for our geography topic based on comparing the physical and human geography of two contrasting localities (Nottingham and Skegness).  Before the trip, we found out about the journey from Nottingham to Skegness, discussed seaside locations and shared past experiences.  The Y2 children also wrote questions we could ask the workers and the holiday makers to find out about the pros and cons of Skegness.

The day itself was jam packed full of fun that helped the children to find out about the human and physical geography of Skegness.

We went for a walk around Skegness, finding out about the key features of the locality; including the fair, the Jolly Fisherman, the lifeboat station, the clock tower, the cafes and souvenir shops, the arcades, the beach, the sea and the pier.

We then enjoyed a picnic on the beach and had fun playing in the sand.

We went in smaller groups down to the the sea for a paddle and explored the shallow waters.

Next, we had a walk along the pier and the Y2 children interviewed some workers and holiday makers.  The children asked their pre-prepared questions and recorded the answers on an I-pad, to look at and use for future work back at school.

Before heading back to Hyson Green, we had time to enjoy an ice-cream.

What a busy day!!!

Retreat Morning – Change

Monday 16th March 2020

Retreat Morning

Theme: Lent – Change

This morning our chaplain, Issie, helped us to find out more about making a change during Lent.

We started our morning by playing ‘wobble’ during which we looked at changing into different animals.  We then watched a clip from ‘Wreck it Ralph’ and talked about how he wanted to change and be a goody.

We shared some of our own Lent promises and reflected on Lent being a perfect time to make a change in our lives and to think about how we can be more like Jesus.  We then sang ‘Man in the mirror’ and created actions to help us to remember the words.

We drew our faces with a sad expression and wrote a sentence about something in the past that we did wrong that we would like to change.  On the back of the paper we drew our faces with a happy expression, ready to use in a later activity.   We then put our sad faces on a mirror, whilst reflecting on our actions.  Issie read us the story of Jesus and Zaccheus and we explored how he changed.

As a class, we made a paper chain of changes.  We each wrote and drew a picture of something we would like to change to make our world a better place.

We ended our session with a liturgy to help us reflect upon ‘change’.  We each turned over our sad expression picture so that our happy expression was now displayed.  We reflected on the changes we can make, saying sorry for our wrong actions and that change should make us happy because we’re doing something positive.

Science Week

During science week the children had fun exploring materials.

We began the week by identifying the materials that a range of percussion instruments are made of, during our music session.  The children then classified the instruments according to the material they are made from.  They compared the sounds that different materials make and discussed why certain materials are not suitable for a percussion instrument.  We finished by creating our own composition based on the material our chosen instruments were made from.

During our second session the children explored a range of objects to answer the following questions:

What material is the object made from?

What does it look like?

How does it feel?

They worked in pairs to describe the properties of the different materials and wrote their ideas on large sheets of paper.  The children then shared all the different words they had used to describe the properties of each material.

We ended the week by performing a simple test to find out if a range of objects were waterproof or not waterproof.  In small groups, the children identified the material each object was made from and then had great fun performing the simple test.  The children found that metal and plastic are waterproof but wool and cotton are not waterproof.
