Cartoon crazy!

Y3 enjoyed a morning building their perseverance and resilience skills when a cartoonist came in to teach them how to draw.

Ian Brearley switched careers following an injury and, despite being told ‘he would never be an artist’ in school, now has a successful career visiting schools and sharing his experiences to inspire others.

The children drew their own version of Gromit using a step by step guide and persevering. They then shared their finished product and reflected on their achievements.

They were all pleasantly surprised with their final drawing!

Y4 celebrate Black History Week

Y4 spent the afternoon learning about some of the notable characters in black history. From scientists like George Washington Carver and Dr Mae Jamieson to civil rights leaders Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela.
We then focused on world champion heavyweight boxer and campaigner Muhammad Ali.
After learning more about his background and history, the children practised and performed a poem about his early success making sure they ‘floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee’!

Newstead Abbey Visit

As part of a Black History Project, we learnt all about David Livingstone and how he helped to free some slaves during the 19th Century.  We visited Newstead Abbey as David befriended the Webb family who used to reside there.  We had an interesting tour, which taught us all about the history of the iconic building and we even got to visit parts of the house where David Livingstone would have stayed.

Cracking cartoons Gromit!

Y4 enjoyed a morning building their perseverance and resilience skills when a cartoonist came in for a session.

The children drew their own version of Gromit after being guided through each stage of the process and reflecting on how they could improve it before sharing their finished products.

Y4 study ‘calling’ at first Retreat

YEAR 4 spent the afternoon with our chaplain, Issie, looking in more detail at their current topic, Called. After introducing the topic, the children discussed, as a class, times they have been called before taking part in an activity to assess where they thought they would be in 1, 5, 10 and 20 years’ time.
They followed this with a session looking at the sacrament of confirmation and passages of scripture where people have received a calling before examining the prayer of St Teresa and its deeper meaning. Finally, on a human template, they recorded how they can experience different types of callings.

It’s a rap for e-Safety Gang!

Y4 put the hip into hip-hop to round off the half-term as they recorded their own e-Safety rap.
After discussing their experiences of using platforms to access the internet and social media, the children wrote, rehearsed and recorded their own rap to promote using them responsibly. We hope you enjoy the results!

Judaism Week

As this terms topic is ‘Biomes and Climate Zones’ we visited The Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Here we were able to see many different animals and discover more about their natural Biomes.

From lions to Polar bears and lemurs to giraffes, it proved an educational and entertaining trip in equal measure!
