The power of poetry!

The children enjoyed writing their own version of Brian Moses’ Into The Lair Of Barron Jugula this week – filled with tension tools and adjectival phrases.

Then they rehearsed them in their pairs before performing them with expression on our outdoor stage.

Making shadow puppets!

For our topic of ‘light’ we made shadow puppets to investigate why and how shadows are made.

To make our puppets, we decided to use cardboard. This is because cardboard is an opaque material. If light cannot pass through, a strong shadow will be created when the source of light is blocked.

After making out puppets, we used the light from the projector to cast a shadow. We noticed that the closer the puppets were to the light, the larger the shadow. This is because light travels in a straight line so the closer the puppet, the less light can pass.

It was so much fun using our puppets to create shadows together! Next term we will use our puppets outside to investigate whether our shadows will move throughout the day.

Year 3’s Viking Day!

Year 3 travelled back in time to the blood-thirsty times of the 800s and 900s AD, when the Vikings invaded England and took over the land in search of riches and resources they could pillage.

In the morning, the children met a real life Viking, Olaf, and took part in an exciting battle with the Anglo Saxons from Snottingham. He taught us many things about what his life was like as a Viking.

In the afternoon, we spent some time examining artefacts, discussing what they could have been and why they were important in that era. Also, we learnt about Viking hierarchy and the different ways in which they lived their lives.

Get your skates on…

During the Summer term, Y4 have enjoyed a five-week course of ice skating lessons at Nottingham Ice Centre.

Overcoming initial anxieties, the children have gone from strength to strength each week as their confidence grew, learning to free skate and skate backwards during the sessions.

The Tunnel – to go through or not to go through?

To cement their understanding of the features of a balanced argument, Y4 read Anthony Browne’s The Tunnel up until the point the sister is faced with the dilemma of following her brother through it.
After coming with a number of arguments ‘for’ and ‘against’ her going through the tunnel, they performed a conscience alley exercise with ‘for’ on one side and ‘against’ on the other.
The children then aired their arguments using a range of sentence starters as the ‘girl’ walked along the alley and made a final decision.

SKIP2BFIT

20 March 2019

Today the whole school took part in Skip2Bfit workshops with John. He talked to us first of all about the benefits of keeping fit and how skipping is an excellent way of building our stamina.  Using special skipping ropes with counters, we practised our skipping skills before taking on a 2 minute skipping challenge to music.  After recording our scores and thinking about how we could improve our original scores, we took part once again in the 2 minute challenge.  Most of us were able to improve on our original scores and are now set to take on the 6 week challenge to improve our fitness.

The day culminated with a whole school assembly where certificates were given out to the top scorers in each class and the top teacher.

The Vikings Have Been!

Year 4 tumbled back in time to the blood-thirsty times of 800s and 900s AD, when the Vikings invaded England and took over the land in search of riches and resources they could pillage.
Following a morning spent examining artefacts and discussing their importance to the era, they then created their own poetry about Danegold and the problems which resorted from the English trying to pay the Vikings off.
During the afternoon the children met a real life Viking and took part in exciting combat battles in the hall versus the Anglo Saxons from Snottingham.

Class Liturgy

Saul to Paul reflection

This week our class liturgy was linked to Acts 9:1-29.  Juliusz read to us and then we reflected on how we could learn lessons in life from the story.  Some of us shared our sins while others spoke to God about them.  We placed our sins in water and washed them away.
