Pentecost Activity Day

On Monday May 24th we celebrated the birthday of the Church-Pentecost! Throughout school there were lots of fun activities happening all day and the children enjoyed a wonderful celebration. The activities included making bracelets and pinwheels and designing and creating our ‘Eyes on theWorld’.

Pentecost reflection day

Today we celebrated the Pentecost, which is the birthday of the Church. We remembered the coming of the Holy Spirit when the disciples were filled with the gifts (love, joy, kindess, hope, wisdom, awe and wonder and courage) and how they used these in their lifes. The theme for the day was Change Begins With Me and thinking about how we can used the gifts of the Holy Spirit to make the world a richer place.

We made these pinwheels that we can put out into our home / school garden and watch them spin round so we can see God’s energy in action.

As well as this, we made bracelets with the words linked to Pentecost. It is our way of spreading the good news and helping us be missionay disciples.

A great part of the day was a drumming session we had with Mr Walters where we sang songs of praise together and used the drums to express the joy of being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Our class mission is to help people less fortunate than us in the world. We have decided to make something to sell in order to raise money to buy a world gift from CAFOD. We will keep you posted about this in the coming weeks.

Spirits high as Year 4 celebrate Pentecost!

The class marked the feast of Pentecost with a jam-packed day of reflection and activities. With a theme of ‘Change Begins With Me’, we spoke about how the disciples had a choice to act before coming up with a mission to help our local community.
The also made bracelets to help with their prayerful reflection, took part in a drumming workshop and made a pinwheel to show the power of the Holy Spirit.

Science Week STEM Challenge

Who knew just how many engineers we had in Year 5!   We had a fantastic morning designing and engineering a warm, waterproof den for a guinea pig, that also provided protection from predators.  We were given sticks, dried grass, plastic wallets, card, selotape, paper clips and rubber bands.  In groups of four, we discussed and designed the dens and then built them.  Once completed, we took them outside and tested whether they were waterproof!

Sporting Superstars

We had a great morning learning how to be sporting superstars!  A small group of us were taught the skills needed to lead a small group around a circuit.  These leaders then guided their group through the activities, recording personal bests and encouraging team work.  We had to run sprint relays, throw a weighted ball from a standing position and hone target throwing skills, to name a few!  We thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to take part again and try to beat our personal bests!

Year 4 prove they are up to Scratch!

Year 4 began their latest ICT topic, Scratch, when they started programming a Romans-themed animation. To tie in with our topic for this term, the children based their stories around two sprites (a Roman soldier and his horse) before building a conversation up using the ‘say’, ‘wait’ and ‘repeat’ blocks.

Burning Pudding Lane!!

Today there was a huge fire at St Mary’s school!!

But don’t worry we had it all under control! The Year 2 topic about the Great Fire of London culminated in the burning of Pudding Lane today. The chidren had all brought in their amazing Tudor houses made at home. We then safely re-enacted the fire on the playground and what an experience it turned out to be for the children!

Some of their comments on the day:

That was the best day of my life! (John)

I felt like I was in The Great Fire of London! (Daisy)

My favourite bit was seening everyone’s houses burn, especially mine. (Tiyanna)

I loved it when there were only ashes left. (Love)

I loved the part when the ashes zoomed into the cloudy, blue sky. (Enoch)

Windy days at St Mary’s for our weather forecasters!

The children turned weather forecasters during our Science Week, when they designed and made their own weather vanes! Using card, play dough, straws, pins and pencils, the children created their weather vanes before heading out into the playground to record the direction of the wind before evaluating the results.

Sensing anticipation in Year 4!

The children began looking at their new text, Leon and the Place Between, by gathering all of the vocabulary they could think of linked to the excitement of waiting to go into a circus. Basing it around the five senses, the children then used the language to construct fantastic sentences for their work.
