Black History 2020

During Black History, Y3 spent time looking at significant events and people.

To begin the week, we looked at images of famous black people from across the globe. We looked at Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Mary Seacole, and discussed what they fought for and why.

Focusing on British black history, we looked at the arrival of many Caribbean immigrants who arrived on the Empire Windrush after WW11. We imagined what it would have been like to leave our homes, live in a new country and face discrimination for the colour of our skin. Imagining we were a passenger, we wrote a recount of our experiences.

Wanting to know more about our local history, we focused on a local hero, George Africanus. We looked at the difficulties he faced living as a slave, how he became Nottingham’s first black entrepreneur and how he used his success to help others in need.  We created an acrostic poem to celebrate his life.

We looked at many books that highlight the achievements of black people – past and present. Using the book ‘Young, Gifted and Black’, we took inspiration from the illustrations and created modern art using pastels. What do you think?

Year 6 Water Colours

Monet is known as one of the founders of the Impressionist movement, along with the other artists experimenting with painting styles at that time. Impressionism inspired our water colour paintings. We hope you appreciate them as much as we have enjoyed creating them.

Learning outdoor

When the weather allows, we work outdoors as much as we can.  A few weeks ago we went on the field to dig up the last of the potatoes.  Mrs Harrison then made a lovely potato salad.

Y4 floors us with their tile work!

To celebrate our topic for the term, Ancient Greece, the children spent the day designing and making their own authentic Greek tile! After designing their tile on paper, the children carefully put their tile pattern into place on a square of cardboard before gluing each individual tile down and then applying grout to fill in the spaces. They were rightly very proud of their efforts!

Game on for the dreidel!

THE children rounded off Judaism Week by making any playing their own dreidel game! The game originally came to force during the Maccabees period when children were not allowed to read the Torah in Egypt, so they used to bring the game out any time an adult came by.

The cap fits in Judaism Week!

The children learned all about the Jewish religion as part of our other faiths week and all of the signs and symbols involved. They even sported a kippah and a tallit – the traditional clothes worn by Jews when they attend the synagogue.

Issie ‘called in’ for class retreat!

Year 4 spent the day with our chaplain, Issie, looking in more detail at their new topic, Called. After introducing the topic, the children discussed, as a class, times they have been called before taking part in an activity to assess where they thought they would be in 1, 5, 10 and 20 years’ time.

They followed this with a session with a prayer by St Teresa of Avila before looking at the various professions you can be called to in life. Issie then guided the children through the story of Samuel and how God persevered with him to enable him to follow his calling. Finally, the children recorded a text message they might receive from God about what he is calling them to do.
