Forest School – Mini Shelters

Todays Forest School focus was to explore making shelters. In groups, the children worked together to create shelters for the toy rabbit and cat. It was important to work as a team to discuss ideas and create a plan of how they wanted their shelter to look.

Forest School – Bird hunt and nest building

This week we heard the story of the ‘Owl Babies’. The story helped us wonder  about the types of birds living in our local area. We decided to go on a bird hunt to identify the birds near our school. We spotted lots of gulls and crows.  Following this, we worked in groups to create bird nests by using natural resources. We hope the birds like our nests!

Nottingham Children’s Book Awards

Forest School – 23rd November 2021

This week we explored the patterns of leaves. To do this we used wax crayons to make leaf rubbings and discuss the patterns they made on the paper. We then enjoyed shaking the leaves on the parachute! It took a while for us to shake all the leaves off.

Forest School – Hedgehogs

During todays Forest School session we found out how we can look after hedgehogs in the winter months.  As part of Forest School we made a hedgehog home using leaves and sticks.  Using clay and natural resources we then made hedgehogs.

Forest School

Today the year 1 children took part in their first Forest School session. They had a fantastic time, which was enjoyed by all.  First, we established boundaries by playing the call and response game ‘1,2,3, where are you?” and played a game of trust and team building called ‘Bat and Moth’.  The children listened to the story of the ‘Stick Man’ and reflected of the Journey the stick man went on. The children then created their own journey sticks, and adding natural resources they found during their journey around the outdoors.  Last of all, the children came together to have a drink and biscuit, while reflecting on their journey sticks.

Potato and bean salad

Last week the children harvested the potatoes and beans which they grew in the summer term of last year.  Today they worked together to make potato and bean salad.  The activity helped the children practise their chopping skills as well as promoting a conversation about safety in cooking.  The best part was tasting the potato salad!

Edible Playgrounds

The school is working on a project called ‘Edible Playgrounds’. This means that over the year, all the children will take part in planting, growing and harvesting fruit and vegetables. They will then use the produce in a cooking activity.  Here are the nursery children harvesting runner beans, potatoes, tomatoes and blackberries.  The children will be using some of this produce to cook a potato and bean  salad.
