Forest School – Bird hunt and nest building

This week we heard the story of the ‘Owl Babies’. The story helped us wonder  about the types of birds living in our local area. We decided to go on a bird hunt to identify the birds near our school. We spotted lots of gulls and crows.  Following this, we worked in groups to create bird nests by using natural resources. We hope the birds like our nests!

Forest School – Hedgehogs

During todays Forest School session we found out how we can look after hedgehogs in the winter months.  As part of Forest School we made a hedgehog home using leaves and sticks.  Using clay and natural resources we then made hedgehogs.

Forest School

Today the year 1 children took part in their first Forest School session. They had a fantastic time, which was enjoyed by all.  First, we established boundaries by playing the call and response game ‘1,2,3, where are you?” and played a game of trust and team building called ‘Bat and Moth’.  The children listened to the story of the ‘Stick Man’ and reflected of the Journey the stick man went on. The children then created their own journey sticks, and adding natural resources they found during their journey around the outdoors.  Last of all, the children came together to have a drink and biscuit, while reflecting on their journey sticks.

Friday Book Market

Image

Every Friday in Year 1, we have our book market. This is where we have time to browse all the books carefully before choosing one we’d like to read alone or share with a friend. We find a comfortable spot to sit and read in the classroom. At the end, we come together for Book Talk where some of us share what we have been reading and often recommend our books to others.

Super Scientists

This week, we had Science Week where we got to carry out lots of investigations. Our favourite was the Paper Cup Challenge where we had to see which group could build the highest tower out of plastic cups. Who do you think was the winning team? The trickiest challenge was building a tower from paper as there were so many problems we had to take into account.

Fruity Art

We have been studying the work of Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo who was famous for creating imaginative portraits out of fruit and vegetables. We made our very own portraits in this style which was fantastic fun There were so many things to choose from!

Year 1 Tree Detectives

Year 1 had fun investigating and finding out about the different trees around school as part of our science topic on plants. We made bark rubbings of our favourite trees and used magnifying glasses to find out what was living on the trunks and on the ground around them. Using a British tree, identification sheet, we were able to match up the leaves and identify each of the trees. Did you know that most of the trees on the school field are sycamore trees?

Toy Story

Year 1 had lots of fun finding out about toys from the past when Lady Lisa visited from a company called ‘Get the Specialists’. We had the chance to play with a selection of indoor and outdoor toys from long ago and compare them with what we play with today.

We even managed to make our very own ‘whizzers’!

Black History Week

What a fact filled week in Year 1!  We have been learning all about the remarkable work of Mary Seacole who was born in Jamaica in 1805. Ms Francis took on the role of Mary Seacole as she told her story.

Using the book The Colors of Us by Karen Kratz, we painted our own portraits and wrote some beautiful poems inspired by the story.

Jamaican soup was delicious!! We used Ms Francis’ favourite recipe but first we had to harvest the vegetables, wash them, peel them and chop them. The colors of us poem (1) The colors of us poem (2) The colors of us poem (3) The colors of us poem (4) The colors of us poem (5)
